5/24/08

I have settled in at the U of M NICU. It is physically quite the change from Beaumont. Mom and Dad say we went from the Four Seasons to Motel 6. I have babies about 3 feet from each side of me. There are about 14 babies crammed in this small room. I have a big boy bed. Mom said she may climb in it and take a nap with me...lol. The doctors and nurses have been great though. I finally got to meet Dr. Nasr. I am still not eating and I am on full TPN. They will try and start feeds in the next 10-14 days. I am still on my antibiotics to treat the Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). I also got another PICC Line in my arm and I have a suction tube back in my nose to help keep the air out of my stomach. Dr. Nasr ordered me to start my Albuterol inhalants today. I will get them twice a day. She said my lungs sound good, but this is all preventative treatment. Dr. Nasr said my biggest problem right now is gaining weight and I have to put meat on my bones. The harder it is for me to gain the more susceptible it makes my immune system.

Love, Ben

Dear Ben,
I-YI-YI; I don't know what to say. Sounds very busy at the new digs. I hope you meet some cool new friends; don't get lost in all the commotion. I have appointments 3 and 4 June. I will definitely visit you. Lots of hugs and kisses till then.

Hi Baby Ben,

The Domines' are thinking about you and praying for you everyday. I told your cousin Sara she needs to get some meat on her bones too. She is almost 9 and weighs 42 pounds. I think we are going to take your mommy's advise and have her tested too. She's been on breathing treatments ever since she was a baby. Hang in there little guy we all love you so much.

Hey peanut! If you get some meat on your bones, we won't be able to call you peanut anymore.

So, what is the scoop on visitors? After seeing you so frequently (and conveniently!) at WBH, I am suffering from Ben withdrawls! We are looking forward to seeing you in your new diggs!

We are so happy that you have got Dr. Nasr on your side. It sounds like she is not wasting any time with your treatment. Yea for Dr. Nasr!

We will see you soon. Eat like a champ as soon as they let you. Big hugs to mom and dad :)

Lots of love -

Hey Ben, it's Aunt Carin. John & I are going to come see you on Monday - one at a time since you're only allowed 2 visitors at once. He's excited to meet you - he loves you so much and can't wait to see you NOT in a picture.

That's pretty stinky about the NEC, but I'm glad they've identified what it is and are treating it. I can't imagine how frustrated you are, and mom and dad, too. Keep fighting Ben.

I love you! Long distance hugs and teeny bitty forehead kisses, xoxoxo

Nice work Ben! You are looking great! You're right about the Motel 6, but I think good things are happening there!

And nice job with the blindside on the nurses - they didn't even know what a ladies man they had coming - you just came through with a sneak attack. Excellent! Ben 28, Nurses 0.

Next time we'll try not to be so boring ;-) Love you little man!
